Daily care
Choose litter for the box you actually use.
Compare materials and handling before comparing bags. Start with the exact device manual if your litter box has a sifting mechanism.

Separate compatibility from preference
A material label tells you what a litter is; it does not prove that it works in every device or that your cat will accept it. Read the box instructions first. Keep a note of the permitted material, fill limit and any exclusions.
For Litter-Robot 4, the current US manual favors clay-clumping litter and excludes non-clumping, loose-clumping, newspaper and wood-based pellets. Other devices may have different requirements. This is not a rule for all litter boxes.
Compare the questions, not marketing scores
| Option | What to establish | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Clumping clay | Allowed by the device; bag size and cleaning routine manageable. | Every brand performs identically or is dust-free. |
| Plant or wood material | Exact manual compatibility before substituting it. | Natural means compatible with a sifting machine. |
| Crystals or beads | Size and sensor limitations specified by the device maker. | All crystals pass through every screen. |
Compare a bag with your storage and lifting plan
A larger bag may be awkward to carry or store. Price per pound is a purchasing calculation, not a prediction of how many days it lasts. Before choosing a size, decide how you will move it from delivery to storage and how you will refill the box.
For one documented unscented clay option, read Dr. Elsey’s Ultra 40 lb. It is a candidate with a verified identity, not a winner from a performance test.
Keep the first change understandable
Changing the box and the litter together makes it harder to identify which change your cat dislikes. The LR4 manual recommends retaining the familiar brand initially when it is compatible. Follow the actual device instructions and observe use rather than relying on a brand claim.
